Sr.Maria Assumpta McGrath

Sister of Providence Sr. Maria Assumpta McGrath died on March 9, 2018 in the 69th year of her religious life.  Born Mary Elizabeth McGrath in Holyoke, MA, the sixth of nine children of Joseph J. and Emaline (Barbeau) McGrath. She graduated from Ascension High School in Worcester, MA and then entered the Sisters of Providence in 1949.  Her younger sister Cecelia entered the congregation two years later.Sister Maria Assumpta began working in the X-ray Department at Mercy Hospital in Springfield in 1952 and graduated from the Mercy Hospital School of X-ray Technology in 1957. She remained at Mercy Hospital until she moved to Our Lady of Providence Children’s Center, working as a Cottage Supervisor from 1959 to 1961.   She resumed ministering as an X-ray technologist for almost half a century at several hospitals: Mercy Hospital in Springfield; St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, MA; Farren Memorial Hospital in Montague City, MA; Memorial Hospital in Worcester, MA; Norwood Hospital, Norwood, MA; and at Dr. Zielinski’s Office in Holyoke, MA.Sister also was a teacher’s aide at the Holyoke Day Nursery and participated in the Clinical Pastoral Education Program at Mercy Hospital from 1977-78.  She continued her ministry in the Radiology Department at Mercy Hospital and in 1990 in Pastoral Ministry there.  Following her retirement from Mercy Hospital in 1994, Sister loved to volunteer there, in both the Radiology and Pastoral Care Departments. She received her 35-year Volunteer Service Award from Mercy Medical Center in 2014.  She is survived by her Sisters in Community, predeceased by her sister, Sister Cecelia McGrath, SP, her brothers and sisters, and survived by her nephew Frank Branchesi and his family, and many friends, especially at the Mercy’s Radiology Department.The Wake will be held on Sunday, March 11, 2018 from 4 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Providence Place, 5 Gamelin Street, Holyoke, MA with a Wake Service at 6:30 pm; Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 12, 2018 at 10 a.m. in the Providence Place Chapel. The Dillon and Edward F. Day Funeral Home, 124 Chestnut Street, Holyoke, MA has been entrusted with the arrangements.  Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of Providence, 5 Gamelin St., Holyoke, MA 01040
