Viola McCarter, 84 of Holyoke, MA passed away peacefully on May 25, 2019. She was the oldest of five children born on September 5, 1934, in Schenectady, NY and the daughter of the late Thomas McNeil and Anna (Henderson) McNeil. She attended the Philadelphia Public School system. She worked for many years assembling venetian blinds at the Kensington, PA company. And she retired after working for 27 years in the housekeeping department at Holyoke Hospital, currently known as Holyoke Medical Center. Before relocating to Holyoke, she was a member of the 21st and Tasker Street Baptist Church in South Philadelphia. Viola was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Community Church and served as a Missionary for many years, as well as serving on the Pastor’s Aide Ministry. She was known in the community for her potato salad, but to the family, her fried chicken and bread pudding were signature dishes. Viola (McNeil) McCarter and Rollie Jr. were married and had five children. She was predeceased by her parents Thomas and Anna, her brother Thomas Jr., her sister Marion and her eldest son Leo. She is survived by her children Barbara, Patricia Spradley (Willie), Gwendolyn and Rollie III, her sisters Ophelia Hill (Daniel) of Ossining, NY and Bessie Smith (Smyth) of Philadelphia, PA, 8 grandchildren, Sean, Tara, Dwight, Derek, Jamaur, Justin, Donovan and Jasmin, 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the celebration of life services for Viola, on Friday May 31st. Wake: 10:00 am. Funeral: immediately following @ 11:00 am at Bethlehem Baptist Community Church, 304 Elm Street, Holyoke. Interment: Forestdale Cemetery, Holyoke.
