Irene Bernstein 1923 – 2021, South Hadley – Irene Garber Bernstein, 97, of South Hadley and previously of Holyoke passed away Saturday, March, 27, 2021, at Armbrook Village in Westfield with family by her side. Born July 17, 1923 in Springfield, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Mary Garber. Irene was a member of Congregation Sons of Zion in Holyoke. She was the loving wife of the late Russell Bernstein, who died in 1997. She is survived by her daughters, Leslie O’Donnell and her husband, Richard of Westfield, and Susan Mackler and her husband, Frederic of Florence. She was predeceased by her sister, Evelyn Greenberg, and her brothers, Clarence Garber and Robert Garber. She leaves her loving grandchildren, Jeffrey and his wife, Melany, Stephanie and her husband, Seamus, Lauren and her husband, Kristofer, and Lindsay and her husband, Sean. Irene was also GG to 7 beautiful and adored great-grandchildren, Diego, Olive, Elliot, Emma, Sydney, Michael, and Cameron. Irene, a strong and independent woman, had an extensive career starting with her nursing training at Holyoke Hospital School of Nursing. After graduation, she worked at what is now Holyoke Medical Center as a nurse, head nurse, and nurse supervisor. She was active on the Holyoke Girl Scout Council. Upon retirement, Irene was actively involved with Sons of Zion, South Hadley Senior Center, ombudsperson program with the Council on Aging, Commission for the Blind, and one of her favorites, Holyoke Hospital bridge group.
