Rebecca (Wimes) Spradley, 82, of Springfield, Mass transitioned on September 1, 2019 surrounded by family. She was the 3rd of 10 children and the daughter of the late Grige Wimes and Sarah (Ruffin) Wimes of Moultrie Georgia. She attended and graduated from the Moultrie High School for Negro Youth. In her youth she was a faithful member of Friendship Baptist Church. In 1956 Rebecca married Willie Lee Spradley, Sr. and in 1958 they relocated the family to Springfield, Massachusetts. Rebecca attended Friendship Missionary Baptist Church and later joined Bethlehem Baptist Community Church where she served in the Usher Ministry and the Pastor’s Aid. She worked and retired from the Springfield Municipal Hospital in 1996.
Rebecca’s gift from God was to be a mom and a proud mom she was. Not only to her own children but to many others as well. She passed on her love of baking to her children. There’s a long-standing debate among many as to which pie was her signature dish, Sweet Potato or Lemon Meringue. She was also known for her incomparable love for her many, many plants.
She was predeceased by her Brothers, Wesley Wimes Sr. of Springfield, Ma., Grige Wimes, Jr. of Moultrie, Ga., her Sister Martha (Wimes) Fuller of Moultrie, Ga and her daughter Carolyn Spradley. She is survived by her brothers Joshua Wimes (Pearline) of Raleigh, NC, David Wimes (Eunice) of Springfield, Ma, Robert “Cee” Jackson of Springfield, MA and sisters Priscilla Bolden of Springfield, Ma, Rachel Powell (Robert) of Atlanta, Ga, Sarah Clayton, Virginia Wimes of Moultrie, Ga, Exavier Victory of Baltimore, Md, Sally Vaughn and Barbara Boyd of Springfield, Ma. Also, her children Willie Lee Spradley Jr (Patricia) of Holyoke, Ma, Timothy Spradley of Springfield, Ma, Michele Harris (Bill), Katrina Bell (Kevin), Leon Spradley, John Thomas (Evelyn) of Springfield, Ma. and Tonya Allen (Derek) of Randallstown, Md. 16 Grandchildren, 12 Great-Grandchildren and a host of family and friends to celebrate her life. The Funeral Services and viewing will be held on Monday Sept.9th at the Bethlehem Baptist Church 304 Elm St Holyoke with a viewing from 10-11 a.m. followed by the Service beginning at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Bay St., Springfield Ma.
